Petr Kopecký is hoogleraar politieke wetenschap. Hij studeerde economie aan de Universiteit van Economie in Praag en politicologie aan de Universiteit van Manchester. Hij promoveerde aan de Universiteit Leiden. Hij was wetenschappelijk medewerker aan de Universiteit van Sheffield en Visiting Fellow aan de European University Institute in Florence, South African Institute of International Affairs in Johannesburg, en Ghana Centre for Democratic Development in Accra. Zijn onderzoeksinteresses liggen op het gebied van politieke partijen en partijsystemen in moderne democratieën. Zijn huidige onderzoek (zie project) richt zich op de relatie tussen partij patronage en de processen van ontwikkeling en organisatorische transformatie van politieke partijen, en op de politisering van de rekrutering van aangestelde elites. Andere onderzoeksinteresses liggen op het gebied van de vergelijkende (Oost) Europese politiek, democratisering, vergelijkende politieke instituties, wetgevend gedrag en het maatschappelijk middenveld. Hij is mederedacteur van East European Politics.
