Colette van Laar studeerde sociale psychologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. In 1992 ging zij met een Fulbright beurs naar de Universiteit van Californië te Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1998 promoveerde zij daar op een proefschrift over de invloed van lage status en stigma op het zelf, motivatie en gedrag. Sinds 1999 is zij werkzaam bij de sectie sociale en organisatiepsychologie. Van 2001 tot 2002 was zij een Visiting Scholar bij de Russell Sage Foundation in New York. In 2006 ontving zij een prestigieuze VIDI subsidie van NWO. Haar onderzoek richt zich met name op de sociale psychologie van lage sociale status en stigma, en de consequenties van stigma voor cognitie, emotie en motivatie/prestatie. Daarnaast verricht zij onderzoek op het gebied van sociale identiteit en intergroepsrelaties. Zij maakt gebruik van zowel laboratorium onderzoek met experimenteel samengestelde groepen als veldonderzoek met bestaande ondervertegenwoordigde groepen zoals vrouwen en etnische minderheden.
