Studeerde van 1978 tot 1985 sociale psychologie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Promoveerde in 1989 hij op een proefschrift over sociale dilemma’s. Werkte in 1989-1990 aan drie verschillende universiteiten in de VS. Hij is sinds 2007 voorzitter van het Opleidingsbestuur van het Departement Psychologie. Daarnaast is zijn taak onderwijs en onderzoek op het gebied van de groepsdynamica: taakverrichting in groepen, free-riding, coöperatie - competitie, beslissen, leiderschap, intra- en intergroepsverschijnselen. Tot 2007 was hij (mede)coördinator van het Tutoraat/Mentoraat Psychologie. Hij is nog steeds coördinator en docent van de 2ejaars Bachelors cursus "Groepsdynamica". In de Masterfase doceert hij de cursus "The Social Psychology of Organizational Behavior". Een deel van zijn onderzoek vindt plaats in het laboratorium. Daarnaast hebben ook sociaalpsychologische toepassingen op het gebied van organisatie- en milieuvraagstukken zijn belangstelling, in de vorm van veldprojecten en begeleiding van stagiaires.

Dr. Wit doet onderzoek naar verschillende aspecten van taakverrichting in groepen, free-riding, coöperatie - competitie, beslissen, leiderschap, intra- en intergroepsverschijnselen en naar andere onderwerpen (zie publicatielijst).
