Maarten Zaal graduated in 2006 in the area of Social Psychology at Leiden University (cum laude). For his MA thesis, he studied the effects of social influence on the perception of subtle forms of discrimination. Maarten has been working as a PhD student at Leiden University since March 2007. His research focuses on the motivation to engage in collective action.

Research

His current research focuses on the effects of regulatory focus on the way members of stigmatized groups deal with their lower social status. In one line of research he examines how regulatory focus influences the decision to engage in collective action. Another line of research examines the effects of regulatory focus on the choice between peaceful and aggressive forms of collective action. In his third research line Maarten investigates the effect of regulatory focus on the way members of low status groups choosse between pursuing individual and collective status improvement.
