Maarten Zaal studeerde in 2006 af in de Sociale Psychologie aan de Universiteit Leiden (cum laude). Voor zijn doctoraalscriptie onderzocht hij de effecten van sociale beïnvloeding op de perceptie van subtiele vormen van discriminatie. Sinds maart 2007 is Maarten als promovendus verbonden aan de sectie Sociale en Organisatiepsychologie van de Universiteit Leiden, waar hij onderzoek doet naar de motivatie tot deelname aan collectieve actie.

Onderzoek

Zijn onderzoek richt zich op de effecten van regulatiefocus op de manier waarop leden van groepen met een lage status omgaan met hun lagere maatschappelijke positie. In één lijn van onderzoek bestudeert de effecten van regulatiefocus op de bereidheid deel te nemen aan collectieve actie. In de andere lijn van onderzoek worden de effecten van regulatiefocus op de keuze tussen vreedzame en agressieve vormen van collectieve actie bestudeerd. In een derde lijn onderzoekt hij het effect van regulatiefocus op de manier waarop leden van groepen met een lage status kiezen tussen het nastreven van individuele of collectieve statusverhoging.
