Henk Staats werkt sinds 1990 bij de sectie S&O. In 1989 promoveerde hij op een onderzoek naar de relaties tussen crowding in grote steden en openluchtrecreatie. Zijn onderzoeksinteresse gaat uit naar de gezamenlijke effecten van de sociale en fysieke omgeving op gedrag, houdingen en gevoelens. Hij coördineert de activiteiten van de Werkgroep Energie- & Milieuonderzoek. Hij is verantwoordelijk voor de planning van het onderwijs van de sectie S&O.

Onderzoek

Henk Staats doet onderzoek binnen twee thema’s van de sociale en omgevingspsychologie.

  • Het eerste is de sociaal-psychologische analyse van milieurelevant gedrag van individuen en groepen, waaronder ook bedrijven en andere organisaties. Daarbij gaat het niet alleen om begrip van het huidige gedrag, maar ook om onderzoek naar beïnvloeding van gedrag in milieuvriendelijke richting, de effectiviteit van interventies. 
  • Het tweede thema heeft betrekking op de voorkeur voor verschillende soorten omgevingen en de functionaliteit van die voorkeuren. Op het ogenblik loopt een reeks experimenten naar de effecten van geestelijke vermoeidheid op de keuze van omgevingen waarin herstel op kan treden.
